Ladislaus  J. (Lou) Bolchazy, PhD
June 7, 1937—July 28, 2012

Ladislaus  J. (Lou) Bolchazy, PhD was the president and founder of Bolchazy-Carducci Publishers (BCP), whose mission is “a better future through the lessons of the past.” Staffed by editors who are classicists, BCP specializes in books dealing with the ancient world. He was especially proud of the company’s Latin for the New Millennium series, launched in 2008, which is the most popular new introductory Latin series in the nation. The Red Flare: Cicero’s On Old Age, a translation of De Senectute and a favorite of Lou’s, was the last book he commissioned and also his 75^th birthday present to himself. During the 1970s and 1980s, when other publishers nearly abandoned Latin, BCP, under Lou’s leadership, provided a steady stream of textbooks allowing teachers to expand the breadth of Latin authors they could teach in their Latin classrooms. After twenty years as Editor of Classical World, Dr. Matthew Santirocco has indicated his
intention of stepping down in October, 2013. The Classical Association of the Atlantic States is now searching for a new Editor, who will assume responsibility in the summer of 2013, and whose first issue will be 107.1 (Sept.-Nov. 2013).
The Editor, who must be a member in good standing of the Association, is appointed
for a term of five years, renewable. S/he has responsibility for the editorial content of the
journal. Working with an editorial board of several associate and assistant editors, the Editor acknowledges and keeps track of submissions, selects referees, informs authors about the status of their articles, and advises them on revisions. In addition, the Editor works closely with the journals division of the Johns Hopkins University Press, which typesets, produces, and distributes each issue.
The Editor is an ex officio member of the CAAS Board of Directors, prepares semi-annual
reports for the Board, and attends its meetings. The Editor receives an honorarium of $10,000 annually, and the Association pays for the editor’s travel and lodging to attend Board meetings during the term of office. As in the past, short-listed candidates will be asked to determine what support their home institutions would be willing to provide to enable them to undertake this work.
Candidates should send a CV and a letter explaining their interest to the Chair of the CAAS
Nominations Committee, Dr. Shelley Haley (officeratlarge@caas-cw.org), not later than January 31, 2013. The Committee also welcomes nominations of suitable candidates.

Beginning with issue 106.1, Classical World will be published by the Johns Hopkins University Press on behalf of the Classical Association of the Atlantic States. Members of CAAS and other individual subscribers should renew their subscriptions as in the past. More information will be shared via this page in the coming weeks and months.

The American School of Classical Studies at Athens has acknowledged and welcomed the increase to $10,000 of the E. Adelaide Hahn scholarship awarded each year, one or two annually, by The Classical Association of the Atlantic States.  These additional funds will enable each year’s selected recipients to participate more fully in the Summer Session of the ASCSA.
