The Kaleidoscope of Antiquity: Shifting Perspectives on the Ancient Mediterranean World and Its Modern Receptions

Each year’s new wave of receptions of Mediterranean antiquity in global media reinforces how influential this deep past remains in popular imaginations around the world. Despite the many “other worlds” in which narratives may be set, and the shrinking footprint of ancient Mediterranean studies in most educational institutions, this past continues to fire the imagination of creators, comfort the balance sheets of companies, and draw audiences in droves. 

And yet, these receptions of Mediterranean antiquity may not carry the same meanings or associations for all participants, including where individuals’ responses may be informed by various aspects of identity. Like an image in a kaleidoscope, both the antiquity that one sees, and the agency of the viewer in creating that image, change depending on how one twists the scope. There is value in multi-faceted antiquities, as well as in the multifaceted perspectives for viewing them. And yet, if perspectives on antiquity as a historical entity, and the meanings of antiquity in modernity, are kaleidoscopic, inquiries into the meanings of these perspectives are complicated by varying degrees of interest in factuality, complicating how scholars might conceive of the future of informed knowledge about antiquity and its reception as a cultural force in contemporary societies around the world. 

For this year’s annual meeting, AIMS welcomes submissions that explore the kaleidoscopic nature of antiquity and its receptions in a wide variety of media and various proposed formats that can fit within a 60-90 minute time slot and be delivered remotely at this online conference. Bryn Mawr Commentaries, a not-for-profit publisher in Bryn Mawr, PA, seeks a managing editor (ME) for its open-access online journal of book reviews, Bryn Mawr Classical Review (BMCR). BMCR publishes continually throughout the year, except for breaks in August and December.
 
The ME is responsible for day-to-day operations of the journal and production of its digital publication, in consultation with and under the supervision of the Senior Editors. Responsibilities include receipt and initial format check of submissions; managing the editorial process for submissions; final formatting of reviews for publication; oversight of BMCR’s WordPress database; assistance with the assignment of books to reviewers; and coordination with and oversight of student employees.
 
The BMCR Managing Editor is a part-time position of 10–15 hours per week, reporting to the Senior Editors.
 
Key Responsibilities:
– Directs all stages of BMCR’s production from initial review of submissions to digital publication
– Coordinates the workflow of editorial process among editors
– Collaborates with student employees in construction of book lists and correspondence with presses, authors and reviewers
– Shares copyediting and layout work with senior editors, and interacts with authors as needed when questions or problems arise
– Manages BMCR’s WordPress databaseMeets regularly with Senior Editors to set BMCR policies, priorities and schedule

Position Requirements:
– Ph.D. (preferred) or ABD in classical studies, ancient history or related field.
– Proficiency using word-processing and publishing software (BMCR uses MS Word, WordPress and Mailchimp).
– Experience in the editorial operations of a scholarly journal highly desired
– Excellent written communication skills
– Exemplary time management skills
– Ability to work collaboratively with remote co-workers
– Authorized for employment in the U.S.

Pay for the ME will be commensurate with experience (with a floor of $30 per hour). The position will commence on Tuesday 6 September or as soon thereafter as possible. Bryn Mawr Commentaries does not provide benefits. CAAS ARC Workshop: “What does race have to do with the Classics?” – Saturday, August 6th, 1pm ET (virtual/Zoom)

On August 6th at 1pm ET, the Anti-Racism Committee of The Classical Association of the Atlantic States will be hosting a workshop: “What does race have to do with the Classics?”. 
This event will invite attendees to explore the different ways the field of Classics is connected to the concept of race and ask them to consider the perspectives of BIPOC students, teachers, and scholars, especially when processing tragic events. This event is free and open to anyone who registers (even non-CAAS members).

This virtual event will take place on Saturday, August 6 at 1pm ET. Registrants will receive Zoom link the morning of the event.

2022-23 Visiting Assistant Professor, Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures and History Department at Lafayette College

The Department of Foreign Languages & Literatures and the History Department at Lafayette College invite applications for a one-year full-time visiting assistant professorship in Classics and Ancient History (3/3 teaching load) beginning Fall 2022. The area of the candidate’s specialization is open. However, preference will be given to candidates with strengths in teaching core Classics and ancient history content at the undergraduate level, including Latin language especially at the elementary level; survey courses of Greek and Roman history; Classical Civilization courses on topics such as Roman culture and society or Classical Mythology. Each semester the successful candidate will be expected to teach two courses in the Department of Foreign Languages & Literatures/Classical Civilization and one course in the History Department. We strongly encourage applications from candidates with prior teaching experience demonstrating a commitment to inclusion and diversity, curricular development, pedagogical innovation, and use of technology. The Ph.D. is required by the start of the appointment.

CANE Summer Institute: Maiores a(n)d Posteriores – July 11-16, 2022

The Classical Association of New England (CANE) invites you to join us on July 11-16, 2022 for this year’s CANE Summer Institute, “Maiores a(n)d Posteriores: Imagining ‘classical antiquity’ into the future.” For the past several decades, CANE has offered a week-long program of mini-courses, professional development workshops, reading groups, and public lectures.

This summer, we are offering access to the institute in two formats: in person at Brown University (room and board options available) and online via CANE Zoom. Participants choose one format when registering. The mini-courses will be offered separately for in-person and online participants; workshops and reading groups will accommodate participants in both formats; public lectures will be in-person and live-streamed simultaneously. Hunter College CUNY Graduate Programs in Latin Education [Fall 2022]

The Classics Program at Hunter College, City University of New York (CUNY), advertises its graduate programs in Latin education. These programs combine courses and mentoring in the vibrant environs of New York City. They aim to foster the ability to make Latin compelling to a diverse population of middle and high school students. Both programs lead to certification in New York State. Applications are accepted in both the Fall and the Spring. The deadline for applications to start in Fall 2022 is March 15th, 2022, but consideration may be made for later applications. 

  • MA in Adolescent Education, Grades 7-12 – Latin

A 49 to 50-credit course sequence in Latin, Classics, and Education that prepares students to teach Latin in grades 7-12. This program is run jointly by the Classics Program in the School of Arts and Sciences and the School of Education.
