The American School of Classical Studies at Athens was founded in 1881 to provide American graduate students and scholars a base for their studies in the history and civilization of the Greek world. Today it is still a teaching institution, providing graduate students a unique opportunity to study firsthand the sites and monuments of Greece. The School is also a superb resource for students and senior scholars pursuing research in many fields ranging from prehistoric to modern Greece, thanks to its internationally renowned libraries, the Blegen, focusing on all aspects of Greece from its earliest prehistory to late antiquity, and the Gennadius, which concentrates on the medieval to modern Greek world, as well as the Malcolm H. Wiener Laboratory for Archaeological Sciences.

ASCSA NEH Fellowships – Deadline October 31, 2019

The American School of Classical Studies in Athens (ASCSA) is accepting applications for National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) fellowships for post-doctoral and senior scholars.

Since its inception in 1994, the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Fellowship program at the ASCSA has demonstrated its effectiveness by supporting projects for 60 scholars with distinguished research and teaching careers in the humanities.

Employment Opportunity: Main Line Classical Academy

The Main Line Classical Academy (www.mainlineclassical.org), a small, academically rigorous K-8 in Bryn Mawr, is seeking a talented, experienced, and enthusiastic part-time LATIN TEACHER for the 2019-20 academic year.

All MLCA students begin the study of Latin in 4th grade.  We eschew some of the more popular modern pedagogical methods which dilute the study of grammar and postpone engagement with original Latin texts.  Our Latin curriculum moves at a fast pace, grounded in rigorous study of grammar and syntax (à la Wheelock).  Already in fifth grade, children begin memorization of short poetic passages from Vergil and Horace.  By 8th grade, they transition from focusing mainly on grammar to reading Caesar, while continuing to review grammar and syntax.

For the 2019-20 academic year, the position will entail teaching Latin to grades 4, 5, and 6, with the total teaching load of twelve 45-min periods/week.  The position may develop into a full-time one in future years as we fill out the grades.

The successful candidate will have serious background in the study of Latin and the Ancient World as well as experience teaching Latin to young students.  He/she will be invested in our pedagogical method: intensive study of grammar, syntax, and vocabulary and rapid progress towards Classical poetry and literature.  Special preference will be given to candidates with an MA or PhD in Classics.

Hesperia Fellow – Extended Deadline: June 3rd, 2019

The Publications Office of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens (ASCSA) seeks a Hesperia Fellow to perform editorial work for Hesperia, the renowned scholarly journal of the ASCSA. Responsibilities include conducting bibliographic research, copyediting, proofreading, and liaising directly with authors, as well as any other relevant tasks as requested by the Editor of Hesperia.

Individuals actively enrolled in a graduate program and individuals with a Masters or Doctorate in the field of Classical archaeology or Classics (within two years of the date of their application) are eligible. Applicants will have excellent writing and communication skills, and a willingness to learn and follow the strict style requirements of the Journal. They will be well organized, detail-oriented, and able to work effectively under the pressure of publication deadlines. The ability to edit onscreen in an electronic workflow is required, as is the ability to have regular electronic contact with the Editor via email and video chat. Experience with Adobe desktop publishing software is preferred. Previous editorial or publishing experience is desired but not necessary.

The Hesperia Fellow reports directly to the Editor of Hesperia and will work remotely. The position follows the academic year and will be 15 hours per week over the fall and spring semesters, with a stipend of $6,000 per semester and a possible option to renew for a second academic year.

FELLOWSHIPS FOR RESEARCH AND STUDY AT THE GENNADIUS LIBRARY 2019-2020

The American School of Classical Studies at Athens is pleased to announce the academic programs and fellowships for the 2019-2020 academic year at the Gennadius Library. Opened in 1926 with 26,000 volumes from diplomat and bibliophile, Joannes Gennadius, the Gennadius Library now holds a richly diverse collection of over 146,000 books and rare bindings, archives, manuscripts, and works of art illuminating the Hellenic tradition and neighboring cultures. The Library has become an internationally renowned center for the study of Greek history, literature, and art, especially from the Byzantine period to modern times.

THE M. ALISON FRANTZ FELLOWSHIP: Ph.D. candidates and recent Ph.D.s from colleges or universities in the U.S. or Canada, for work in the Gennadius Library for the full academic year. Stipend of $11,500 plus room, board, and waiver of School fees.
DEADLINE: JANUARY 15, 2019.

COTSEN TRAVELING FELLOWSHIP FOR RESEARCH IN GREECE: Short-term travel award of $2,000 for senior scholars and graduate students, for work at the Gennadius Library. Open to all nationalities. At least one month of residency required. School fees are waived for a maximum of two months.

MEDIEVAL GREEK SUMMER SESSION AT THE GENNADIUS LIBRARY: Graduate students and college professors in any field of late antique, post-antique, Byzantine or medieval studies at any university worldwide. Month-long program in intermediate level Medieval Greek language and philology at the Gennadius Library, with site and museum trips. Up to twelve scholarships available.
DEADLINE: JANUARY 15, 2019.

(POSITION IN ATHENS)

Deadline: October 31, 2018

Term: A full-time (12 months) position beginning July 1, 2019 for three years, with the possibility of renewal for a final fourth year.

Compensation: Salary commensurate with experience; benefits include room and board at the School.

Qualifications: Candidates must have earned the PhD from a North American university no more than three years prior to the application and must have spent a minimum of a year as a Member of the ASCSA. An active agenda for research and publication, knowledge of Greece and Modern Greek, and teaching experience are expected.

Duties:
To help the Director in the administration of School business and to stand in for the Director when needed. Reports to the Director of the School.
To assist with the academic program under the direction of the Mellon Professor by lecturing, leading short trips or offering mini-seminars/workshops on area(s) of expertise.
To serve as a contact and resource person for all members of the School and to live in Loring Hall.
To help with the planning of the Summer Session by suggesting itineraries, speakers, and generally offering support to the Summer Session Directors, but not making actual arrangements.
To be a visible presence in the Athenian social and academic scene by attending functions as an official of the School.
To pursue research on a project.

Elizabeth A. Whitehead Distinguished Scholar

One or Two Positions for 2019-2020

Term: Early September to June 1.

Eligibility: A senior scholar working in any area related to the mission of the School with a significant record of publication and teaching who is affiliated with a Cooperating Institution. Preference will be given to those who have not received recent support from the School. Previous holders of the Whitehead may apply if the previous term was at least five years prior.
Project: The Whitehead Distinguished Scholar shall pursue research on a project that utilizes the facilities of the School and enriches its academic program. Whitehead Scholars participate in School trips and excursions, work closely with Regular and Student Associate members of the School during the winter term (late November to late March) on the subject of their expertise, and generally participate in the academic life of the School. A more detailed description of this position and a list of past Scholars’ work with members is available on the School’s website (www.ascsa.edu.gr). Applicants are encouraged to consult with the Mellon Professor in Athens well in advance of the October 31 deadline when crafting their proposed contributions to the academic program of the School.
Compensation: Stipend of $40,000 plus round-trip coach airfare to Athens, board at Loring Hall for the Whitehead Scholar (one-half senior rate for spouse, and one-half student rate for dependents), School housing, and hotel and transportation on up to four of the five field trips (western and northern Greece, Peloponnesos, central Greece, Crete, and the Corinthia and Argolid) and transportation on all winter Attica excursions.
