Eos READS: Wole Soyinka’s Bacchae
If you are interested in including more Africana receptions of the Classics in your teaching and scholarship, please consider joining us at the annual meeting of the Classical Association of the Atlantic States (CAAS) for our second “Eos READS” event (October 12, 2019 at 2:30pm).
“Eos: Africana Receptions of Ancient Greece and Rome” (eosafricana.org) is a scholarly society that exists to create a supportive, dedicated community for studying Africana receptions of ancient Greece & Rome and to foster collaborative research and pedagogy between Classics and other disciplines. The READS series introduces Classicists to seminal works from the African diaspora so that they may be incorporated into course curricula. Each year READS features one work or a related set of texts for discussion at the invitation of institutions and as recurring programming at national and regional conferences.
The focus, this year, will be on Wole Soyinka (winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1986) and his play The Bacchae of Euripides: A Communion Rite (1973). To facilitate engagement with the play, the format will mimic an advanced seminar in which CAAS members are invited to participate. We encourage you to register in advance at the link provided below so that you can receive the text and discussion questions ahead of the workshop, but all of the necessary materials will also be provided on site.

The 37th Classical Association of New England Summer Institute will take place July 13-18, 2020 at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. The theme will be “The Empire and the Individual.”
The organizers of the CANE Summer Institute invite you to join them for a weeklong examination of peoples and cultures that comprised the Classical Greek and Roman worlds. Employment Opportunity: Main Line Classical Academy
The Main Line Classical Academy (www.mainlineclassical.org), a small, academically rigorous K-8 in Bryn Mawr, is seeking a talented, experienced, and enthusiastic part-time LATIN TEACHER for the 2019-20 academic year.
All MLCA students begin the study of Latin in 4th grade. We eschew some of the more popular modern pedagogical methods which dilute the study of grammar and postpone engagement with original Latin texts. Our Latin curriculum moves at a fast pace, grounded in rigorous study of grammar and syntax (à la Wheelock). Already in fifth grade, children begin memorization of short poetic passages from Vergil and Horace. By 8th grade, they transition from focusing mainly on grammar to reading Caesar, while continuing to review grammar and syntax.
For the 2019-20 academic year, the position will entail teaching Latin to grades 4, 5, and 6, with the total teaching load of twelve 45-min periods/week. The position may develop into a full-time one in future years as we fill out the grades.
The successful candidate will have serious background in the study of Latin and the Ancient World as well as experience teaching Latin to young students. He/she will be invested in our pedagogical method: intensive study of grammar, syntax, and vocabulary and rapid progress towards Classical poetry and literature. Special preference will be given to candidates with an MA or PhD in Classics.
To apply, please send a resume and cover letter, including salary history, to info@mainlineclassical.org with “Applicant for Latin Position” in the subject line.
Employment Opportunity – Haddonfield Memorial High School
Haddonfield Memorial High School (Haddonfield, NJ – Camden County) is looking for a long-term substitute for Latin available November 7, 2019 (approximate start date) through March 6, 2020. Applicant must be able to teach all levels of Latin and have NJ certification. Application period closes August 1, 2019.
