Call for Applications: Program Chair, The Classical Association of the Atlantic States, 2021-2024

The Classical Association of the Atlantic States is seeking applications for the position of Program Chair. The Program Chair will serve a three-year term, beginning immediately after the fall 2021 CAAS annual meeting and running through the end of the fall 2024 annual meeting. The position carries a stipend, and may be renewed for more than one term.  The applicant must live or work in the CAAS area (Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania).

The responsibilities of the Program Chair include selecting and overseeing a diversely constituted committee of twenty-five CAAS members, from all six civic jurisdictions in the CAAS region, to organize a program to be presented at the annual meeting, based on the committee’s anonymous assessments of submissions: both abstracts of individual papers and proposals for panels and workshops. Committee members also serve as presiders at paper sessions, and in this capacity work with individuals in their sessions whose abstracts and proposals have been accepted: by sharing edited versions of program committee assessments to provide constructive feedback, and facilitating the transformation of abstracts into 15-minute presentations for oral delivery that are accessible to all attendees at the CAAS meeting.

The Program Chair works closely with both the Executive Director and Webmaster in planning and publicizing the annual meeting. Most of the Program Chair’s work takes place between the time of the spring Board meeting in April and the fall meeting in October. The Program Chair is also a member of the CAAS Executive and Nominations Committees, serves on the Awards and Clack Lecture Committees ex officio, and oversees the application and selection procedures for travel subsidy awards. A record of previous participation in CAAS programs and service on the CAAS Program Committee will be accorded special weight.

Please send applications to Ralph Rosen rrosen@sas.upenn.edu by August 21, 2021.  Applications should include a letter of interest, the names and contact information of three references, and a current curriculum vitae.
