Classical World Fashion & Design Show II

In harmony with the events of the the 2013 International Archaeology Day on Saturday, October 19, the Philadelphia Classical Society, in partnership with Bryn Mawr College, will host the second Classical World Fashion & Design Show dedicated to the memory of Norma Goldman, on Sunday, October 20th Mawr’s Thomas Great Hall.

Professor Goldman was best known to students for her wonderful text, Latin Via Ovid, in which she brought to life the intriguing stories of Ovid’s Metamorphoses. In addition, according to the recollection of Dr. Henry Bender, Professor Goldman, during her prodigious career, had amassed a sizeable and impressive collection of costumes based on antiquity.

At last year’s show, Professor Michele Ronnick of Wayne State University paid tribute and homage to Dr. Goldman, followed by Dr. Bender who attested to the life and accomplishments of the eminent Dr. Rudolph Masciantonio.

To participate in the show, male and female students, grades 1-12, are encouraged to design and assemble costumes, or individual pieces, including jewelry, based loosely on an ancient Greek or Roman artifact.

At the show, students will offer a brief description of the artifact and demonstrate or display the costume, or individual piece, as a way of connecting the material culture of antiquity to the Classical Languages studied.

Guests and participants will also get an opportunity to “experience” and handle authenticated replicas of strategic material objects of antiquity through the fabulous efforts and acquisitions of Joe Balmos, Founder-Director of “A Day With Ancient Greece and Rome.”

It costs only $5 to participate or attend. As was done with the inaugural monies raised last year, a scholarship will be funded to honor Dr. Rudolph Masciantonio, who introduced Latin as a FLES program in the Philadelphia School District in the early 70’s.

The scholarship recipient will be a 2014 graduate in good standing from Boys Latin Charter School in Philadelphia, who will major or minor in the Classics. As stated, this event will be held on the day following celebrations of International Archaeology Day.

Doors open in Thomas Great Hall at 2 pm, followed by light refreshments of “Mediterranean idiom,” sponsored by Whole Foods of Wynnewood. To register, or to contribute toward the scholarship, contact Magistra Mary Brown, or visit the Philadelphia Classical Society website for more information and to download the current flyer.
